YEAR 2014

This brings back memories… We all (or almost all) once participated in this project ourselves when we were still students. And by the leading teachers we were asked to create a video in which all 18 participating groups showed their installation.

The project is called ‘temptation’, because students are assigned with the task to create an interactive installation which tempts passing pedestrians to enter a shop, where the installation is standing. Students can do this in all sorts of ways, but generally it involves some programming, some electromechanics and some heavy creative craftsmanship.

The video from the previous year (not created by us) was somewhat of a disappointment because it did not show all teams but only a loose selection. So, we were instructed to find a solution to cram 18 groups into 4 minutes of video, and grant each and every team some screentime in that video, and still retain a logic story.
This could only be done if there was a strict structure in shots and narration, so we came up with the following solution:

  • Every group gets an equal amount of screentime, 10-15 seconds. The groups are placed in chronological order in the video. The groups are separated with a white flash.
  • Every group has 1 reveal shot
  • A member of each group says in a short interview:
    • The group name
    • The installation name
    • What the installation does
  • 5 Shots (2 total shots, 3 closeups) of the installation are taken, with the closeups being the most representable parts of the installation

One could say this would make a rather boring video, but the opposite is true. It is fast paced but still structured and understandable. The viewer does not loose track which installation it actually sees (which would happen if you mix all the groups), and it makes a great overview and enumeration of all the groups and installations which were present.
